Migraine is a chronic condition which is a classified as a subtype of chronic headaches is characterized by chronic headaches which can last for more than 15 days per month. While it is straight forward to describe migraine using clinical terms, its symptoms are varied and do not occur in every patient or even in every attack. In fact migraines can easily be mistaken for tension type headaches which are the most common form of primary headaches were it not for the presence of associated features.
Typically migraine attacks have been known to last for a period of 4 to 72 hours and may show symptoms such as unilateral head pain and the aggravation of such pain in response to movement or light with associated nausea and vomiting (Goadsby, Lipton, & Ferrari, 2002 ).
Attacks of Migraine have been known to start at any age and also to typically peak in early to mid teens. Sufferers of this disorder are known as migraineurs. Statistics have shown the prevalence of the disease in the United States and Western Europe to be 11 percent overall with 6 percent of men and 15 to 18 percent of women being affected (Goadsby, Lipton, & Ferrari, 2002 ). Statistics in the United Kingdom show that migraine sufferer within the 20 to 64 year old range undergo 37 attacks per year (Anthony & Rickarby, 2009).
