The narrator shows how the soldiers let themselves to be illuded by faith which they were looking up to as savior but the bitter fact of life comes to light at the nullity of the faith. Instead of granting them hope, faith serves to fell them into pessimism as it fails to save the lives of the religious soldiers. The irony creeps in when the death of Kiowa occurs who is the most religious character in the story.
Even the non-religious characters meet a horrible end too as the author makes it clear that war does not distinguish among men. Being religious ones does not imply the purity of faith because here religion is used only as a morphin addiction which like other addictions that the soldiers are carrying, drugs and marijuana, helps the soldiers to overcome fear and to move into the world of illusion.
