From a functional perspective medicine is a part of a social system which is essential to maintaining its stability. It is requires to ensure that people are healthy enough to remain functional members of society. Once they are healthy they contribute to society by being workers, parents, consumers, etc. However when it is used to derive a perspective regarding the health care system of the United States we find that the system does not function towards the benefit of society due to the inclusion of the profit motive.
While the functionalist viewpoint places medical professionals to be in charge of treatment. The optimal functioning of this perspective requires a level of symbiosis between the patient and the health care provider which simply does not exist (Stolley pg30, London).
