In comparison to Gulf countries, North African countries have allowed abortions within their states for several years and their legality follows the same guidelines as in Turkey and Tunisia. Despite the issuance of these laws there are still a high number of unsafe abortions still occurring in both North and South Africa. According to data collected by the World Health Organization, the mortality rate due to unsafe abortions in 2003 was staggeringly high in East Africa.
The data shows 770 deaths occur in every 100,000 abortions. Though the figure may constitute 1% of the total, the number of unsafe abortions which occur in the region is cause enough for concern. In comparison Northern Africa only had a mortality rate of 130/100,000. Other regions such as South Central Asia experienced rates of 380/100,000 and Western and South East Asia experienced rates of 260/100,000 and 100/100,000 respectively. Only Western Asia constitutes the gulf region (Dabash & Roudi-Fahimi, 2008).
