Despite the negative connotations given by stereotypes in relation to culture and linguistics, they can also have a positive side. Knowing the stereotype of a culture can enable that culture to shine its more complementary qualities in public and discourage its undesirable traits (Ren & Wang, 2006).
According to Kang and Rubin in their study conducted on the “Reserve Linguistic Stereotyping” phenomenon, based on their attributes as a speaker, it possible for an individual to actually challenge stereotypical perceptions about his social group. He speaks of how individuals in these ethnic groups establish a multicultural environment to help themselves to gain proficiency in language varieties. This proficiency can lead to various language varieties being acclimated at different levels (Kang & Rubin, 2009).
