The process to obtain ISO 9001:2000 involves the implementation of a quality management system and includes several steps from identification of goals to carrying out plans while eventually achieving consistent quality in goods and services. The first step of the process involves the identification of company objectives or goals related to quality. The second step involves evaluation of customer expectations and the third step is acquiring knowledge about ISO 9001:2000 and any relevant standards.
The knowledge acquired is then applied to the current quality management system and seeking guidance in areas which may prove problematic. The next phase involves the comparison of current quality standards with requirements of ISO 9001:2000 and removing any differences found in the comparison. The plan of quality management system is then implemented and internal audit of quality is carried out periodically. The next step involves external quality audit by an independent auditor and the final step involves continued improvement of quality by the business (Jeston and Nelis 2006).
