Using two analysis written by William Luis and Ricardo Castells in their reviews of the book “How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents” by Julia Alvarez, this paper will attempt to discern the loss of identity for the four Garcia girls and how in this book they are caught in an identity crisis which tears them away from the world they left behind and the world they have been thrust into.
In the novel in question, the author Julia Alvarez uses experiences from her own life as a basis to establish the loss of identity, culture and the psychological strain of adapting to life in the United States in the 1960s. Aliens in an alien land, the Garcia girls are subjected to racism, sexism and undergo a change which in many ways leaves them unrecognizable versions of their former selves.
The concepts of presented by both authors of the analysis mentioned above will be used to explore the various ways in which the girls lost what defined them as Hispanics in American culture and how they attempted to find their cultural identity once more.
