The findings of the study become vulnerable as data collected for the research lacks validity owing to the status of the subjects or the participants of study. The researchers claim that the study ‘employs’ data from the National Youth Survey due to the ‘considerable methodological attention given to the NYS’ as well due to the ‘general agreement as to their reliability and validity’ (Field & Mears, 2002, p.22).
The researcher could have analyzed the data from primary sources as the study was published in 2002 while the data that they analyze was collected from the third ‘wave’ of the NYS when the youth were ages 13 to 19 (Field & Mears, 2002, p.22). The endorsement of the reliability and validity of data from the researchers does not imply that the findings can be made valid for the general population to whom the study would be important. The corelation between the participant or sample, subjects who participate in the study, and the population, subjects for whom the study bears some importance, is essential otherwise the findings are not considerable for the population.
