For this first SLP you are going to put into practice what you have learned about sets and counting. I want you to create two sets, set A and set B. Set A will be a list of five items you personally NEED to buy the most (essential items). Set B will be a list of five items that you WANT to buy the most (fun stuff). List the items in Set A and Set B, and also list or state the items in the union and in the intersection of Set A and Set B. Now assume that the prices of the items in your set A are 20, 40, 60, 70 and 80. Assume that the prices of the items in your set B are 90, 120, 30, 60 and 40.

Note: if you have one or two identical items in both sets, then assume that the prices of the identical items are the same as the prices that appear in set A (instead of having two different prices to the same item.)

What will the total cost of Set A be if it contains one unit of each item? What will the total cost of the union set be if it contains one unit of each item? What will be the total cost of the intersection? What will the total cost of the union and of the intersection be if you consider two set A\’s and three set B\’s ?

Here Set A = { Mobile Phone, Sunglasses, Shoes, Body Spray, Socks} and Set B = {Car, Sunglasses, Styling Gel, Wrist Band, A Really Expensive Belt}

With respect to price, Set A = {20,40,60,70,80} and Set B={90,40,120,30,50}.

The total cost of Set A will = {270}.

The total cost of Union of both sets will be   C = AUB = {Mobile Phone, Sunglasses, Shoes, Body Spray, Socks, Car, Styling Gel, Wrist Band, A Really Expensive Belt}  =  {20,40,60,70,80,90,120,30,50} = {560}.

The total cost of Intersection of both sets will be D = A∩B = { Sunglasses} = {40}.

The total cost of union if two Set A and Three Set B are considered.

The resulting set will be

E = AUAUBUBUB = {Mobile Phone, Sunglasses, Shoes, Body Spray, Socks, Car, Styling Gel, Wrist Band, A Really Expensive Belt} {20,40,60,70,80,90,120,30,50} = {560}.

The Intersection of two set A and three set B will be

F = A∩A∩B∩B∩B =  {Sunglasses} = {40} (Waner, 2006).
