My perspectives as an adolescent were limited by my surroundings. I grew up in a predominantly white community and adopted the same cultural and moral values as the majority of the people in my community. My expectations and perceived needs were heavily influenced by the social circle I was a part of which was again predominantly white. I found myself abandoning such expectations when I entered the navy and became exposed to several different cultures and ideologies. My experiences with people from various backgrounds changed my perceptions of the world around me and gave me the skills to better communicate with people from all backgrounds.
