Migraine is a condition which is related to a varied group of disorders characterized by chronic headaches which can last for more than 15 days per month. This disorder has been characterized by symptoms which include severe chronic headache, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and concurrent neurological symptoms in certain patients. While studies have shown psychiatric disorders to have co-morbidity with migraines, the disorder itself has neurological symptoms which are prevalent in migraines with auras.
The pathophysiology of the migraines is characterized by a series of events which begin with the dilation of the blood vessels in the brain which over a prolong period can result in the inflammation of the surrounding cranial vessels. The release of these inflammatory markers, as well as systemic inflammatory markers and specific symptoms allow us to make the contention that migraines are not psychological but rather neurovascular in nature.
