The emergence of mass media resulted in tremendous use being made of radio, cinema and television to transmit commercial messages.
After a slight slowdown during the days of the great depression, advertising regained its importance in the mid twentieth century as people got more amounts of money to spend and could be manipulated by advertisements. With the increasing importance of television in the following decades, it was recognized as a crucial medium in the fight for people’s money. Whole television programs began to be sponsored by products which were advertised throughout, thereby giving them some element of control as well in the sequence of the programs.
