The lifetime prevalence of Generalized Anxiety Disorder in today’s population is at 5 to 6 percent index compared to other anxiety disorders. GAD or Generalized anxiety disorder is usually a severe and chronic anxiety disorder characterized by a patient having headache, flushing of the face, insomnia, sweating palms, tremulousness, and frequent urges to urinate and experiencing a profound muscular tension that results to inability to relax. Importantly, the patients diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder apart from indicating chronic free-floating anxiety with continual worry about trivial matters, they also exhibit easy distraction that results to poor concentration. This has a profound negative effect on the learning of these children and adults, because it makes studying activities and work very difficult for them.
More specifically, for a patient to be diagnosed with GAD as opposed to other anxiety disorders, the patient should exhibit insomnia, tension and hyper-vigilance or uncontrollable worrying and somatic anxiety for a period not less than 6 (six) months. The prevalence rate of 5 to 6 percent is varied across regions depending on the diagnostic criteria employed. For instance, using DSM-III-R results reflect 3.62 percent. Whereas, by using DSM-IV diagnostic criteria resulted to outcome of 5.10 percent prevalence. In terms of age distribution in relation to prevalence of GAD, most cases are evident amongst adolescents below age 25 year, while the incidences increases later in individuals life at age 35 to 45 years. Furthermore, studies indicate Generalized Anxiety Disorder at age 55 to 85 years amongst the elderly persons.
