With these scenes begins one of the most critically accepted movies of all times. This paper will analyze the movie. In doing so, the paper shall highlight the storyline, the themes of the movie, the cinematography styles as well as the camera work, the director’s special touch as well as the historical and social relevance of the movie. As a thesis, the paper shall attempt to determine the authenticity of the perception that considers the movie to be an exceptional example of movie making. In the process of the analysis of the movie in light of the thesis, the paper shall also give attention to the cast of the movie and to the contribution that each primary cast member made to the development of the plot and to the movie in the process.
The movie L.A. Confidential is set in the 1950s and is based on the novel by the same name written by James Ellroy. The movie, much like the novel, centers on three central characters, all three of who are police officers and are aggressive in their own styles of law enforcement. The three central characters are Sergeant Edmund Exley, Officer Wendell Bud White and Sergeant Jack Vincennes, played by movie actors Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe and Kevin Spacey respectively. The movie was directed by Curtis Hanson and co-starred Kim Basinger, James Cromwell, Danny DeVito and David Strathairn (Hanson and Helgeland).
The plot unfolds against a backdrop of lies, sex, deceit and murder. The LAPD is in the middle of this concoction of corruption and elements in the LAPD are actively engaged in them. Organized crime becomes a major part of the plot as it continues to evolve.
