There is no safe limit to alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and the effects of alcohol on the fetus are multiple and life-long. This includes the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which comprises of congenital physical defects and mental retardation. Although abstinence is recommended throughout pregnancy, women who drink excessively only consider if after they find out that they are pregnant and by that time the damage has probably been done. Such pregnancies carry the additional risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery and still birth. (Kesmodel, 2002) Moreover, the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is significantly increased.
Other health concerns common to both genders include impact on the liver (fatty infiltration and cirrhosis), brain (memory loss and shrinking of brain) and heart (myopathies). Alcohol increases the risk for cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, colon and breast (in women). (WHO) This is not only a problem of the adults. People between the ages of 12 and 20 are responsible for the consumption of 11% of the alcohol consumed in theUS, mostly during binges. The percentage of adolescents abusing alcohol was 20%. The consequences of this age group indulging in alcohol include deteriorating academic performance, changes in brain development that may be permanent, misconduct and abuse of other illicit drugs.
