Malaria’s symptoms include fever, chills and sweating, headaches, muscle fatigue and back/joint pain, anemia, nausea and vomiting, hemoglobinuria (the presence of a reddish color in the urine), retinal damage and convulsions. Typically, the infected person remains symptom-free for 6 to 15 days after being infected.

Then, there is a sudden onset of coldness immediately followed by chills (shaking), fever and sweating which occur for about four to six hours. In case of infection by P. ovale and P. vivax, such conditions reoccur every two days, whereas for P. malariae infections it is three days. P. falciparum infections can result in acute fever occurring every 36-48 hours or a chronic but almost continuous fever.

In severe cases (almost always caused by P. falciparum), malaria can cause enlargement of the liver and spleen (hepatomegaly and splenomegaly respectively), renal failure, coma and death. Severe cases must be treated rapidly. Even with intensive treatment, fatality rates are often above 20%, with mental and physical abnormalities often reported in children who have suffered severe malaria.
