The large intestine also known as the colon is a section of the human alimentary tract which is absorbs the resulting digestive fluids and electrolytes coming from the small intestine. It is also responsible for storing and ejecting waste matter from the body via the anus by the use of contractile movement. A simple columnar epithelium lines the walls of the large intestine and it also has an abundance of goblet cells which are far greater in number than the small intestine (Palmer, Penman and Brown 2004).

The disease in question known as Ulcerative Colitis is grouped with Crohn’s disease under chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. It differs from Crohn’s disease since it is restricted to the colon and the rectum while Crohn’s disease can occur in any part of the alimentary canal (Palmer, Penman and Brown 2004). Its course occurs over years and starts at a young age possibly 15 to 30 years of age and extends into the fifth to seventh decade less frequently (National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse 2006).
