Term Paper: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is an American corporation which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). It runs a global chain of retail stores which comprise of supercenters, discount stores, departmental stores and neighborhood markets. As per the Fortune magazine in 2008, it was named as the largest public corporation in the world (revenue wise). Wal-Mart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton and has its headquarters situated in Arkansas, US. Despite the global economic recession, Wal-Mart made staggering revenue of more than 400 billion USD in 2009 with a net income of above 13 million USD. It further boasts of more than 2 million employees worldwide.
In 1962, when Sam Walton founded the company he understood the need that people should save money in order to live a better life. This paved the way for the company’s objective which was to save people money so they can live better.
This objective remains as much valid today as it was more than 40 years ago.
Wal-Mart continues to focus on competitive pricing such that it results in increased savings for customers which will eventually lead to greater profitability and return on investment (ROI).
Wal-Mart launched the Project Impact which was a remodeling plan for its stores in the US, targeted at making shopping easier and to increase operational efficiencies.
Similarly, the logistics divisions in the US introduced some changes in warehouse handling and transportation which will result in increased savings
Wal-Mart intends to buy locally for its diverse international operations. This is focused at strengthening the local agriculture and farmers.
Wal-Mart continues to expand its private brands which have been instrumental in providing it price leadership along with greater value to customers.
