Summary of Chapter 1 of Lord of the Flies – The events began on the island, where two boys chat about the plane crash that landed them here, Ralph and Piggy. Piggy doubts that after he discovered anything about a nuclear bomb during the flight, nobody has come to their aid, and thus assumes that the entire planet has been lost and that they are all alone.
The boys talk a little bit about themselves—Ralph talks about how “a commander in the Navy. When he gets leave he’ll come and rescue us .’ Piggy is the complete opposite of Ralph and he says: “I used to live with my auntie. She kept a candy store. I used to get ever so many candies. As many as I liked”. He’s chubby, he has allergies, and he doesn’t know how to dive.
To schedule a general conference, he utilizes the shell. Other children come from across the island, including the founders of the choir of boys headed by Jack Merridew. “Among his “gang of shrouded people,” Jack evidently has a lot of authority. All and all, the boys appear sad that the island doesn’t have any adults. They address the need for themselves to be coordinated.
Since Ralph was the one who called the meeting, he was elected “chief” of the party by the boys. Jack is upset with such a decision because he has suggested his own candidate for the position of leader. Jack has proclaimed his party “hunters” from this day onwards.
