‘The founding and manifesto of futurism’ was written in 1909 by Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. The English translation was published in 1912. The article raised both curiosity and consternation due to the message it contains. Simply put, the manifesto describes how it came to be written and gives eleven points or factors that futurists will follow.

According to Marinetti, futurism was breaking away from the past and its cold confines into something that was new and energetic. Those futurists would refuse to follow the old and gloried ways of the past that were seen as limiting, quiet and lacking strong content. Instead, they would let their imaginations soar, in the process, follow their instincts, and do what pleased their hearts. The manifesto thus idolizes speed, virility, technology and war.
