Most infections caused by this parasite are asymptomatic and about 10-20 % of the infections develop into amoebic dysentery and causing thousands of deaths. Some of the symptoms exhibited by patients with minor infections include loose stools, stomachache, flatulence and intermittent constipation.

Severe infections on the other hand cause amoebic dysentery due to the inflammation of the mucosa of the large intestine. Some of the symptoms include, bloody diarrhoea, fatigue, appendicitis, fever, liver abscesses which can lead to death if untreated, inflammation of the peritoneal wall, painful passing of stool, weight loss among other symptoms.
