Term Paper: The fact that SMEs rely on custom business processes was quite evident from this survey. It was observed from that data that all SMEs used customized business processes to conduct business hence continued to use legacy systems integrated into the ERP implementation in order to maintain the flexibility that provided them the competitive advantage. In this survey as well, 50% of SMEs indicated that they still used legacy systems with their implementation which were both integrated together.

In most of the cases this integration was achieved through the use of web services which were made available with the help integrated development programming language using Service-oriented architecture (SOA). SMEs also indicated that this approach was preferred because the use of web services made the integration of ERP with other systems much more easier. 40% of SMEs had migrated completely to the implemented system. Only 1 SME made use of traditional integration module for linking legacy systems with the ERP system, however, a strong commitment  was shown toward migrating this link to SOA based in the near future as they believed it provided a much better way of interfacing their legacy systems as well as new third party application with the ERP.

4.4.2 Multi-Language Support

From the survey data that was collected in this research, it was observed that there was trend in SMEs for turning toward international arena. 8 out of 10 SMEs that were surveyed indicated that they either already had offices in multiple countries or were planning to open office in other countries in the next 2 years. 60% of the SMEs with existing international presence had their office in China and Japan while 20% of SMEs also had their offices in UAE and other Middle Eastern countries. SMEs with planned international entries had their eyes on China, Japan, Eastern European countries, Brazil and the US.

4.4.3 Business Logic Support

Flexibility is an important trait for SMEs, hence this survey also investigated how the flexibility was maintained within the SMEs business processes even after the implementation of ERP. The core processes of a SME are important for flexibility of an SME and this was indicative in this survey as well. In this survey, when asked about automation of core processes, 60% of the SMEs indicated that their core business processes were automated by the ERP. However, in 40% of SME core business processes automation was done with the help of custom module that implemented precise business logic of the core processes of the SME. This allowed the SMEs to remain flexible as any change in business logic of core business processes would requires change to only these core functionality modules. There was also a trend of using multi-vendor approach to ERP, which allowed the SME advantages such as cost effectiveness as the SMEs were able to select database and components according to their own technical and scalability requirements and budget. However, SMEs mentioned that this type of implementation was costly and complex.
