Psychology Coursework – Psychology is considered to be one of the most interesting out of the subjects being offered at different schools and colleges these days. It deals with the human brain and how it makes different people behave differently in similar situations.
One branch of psychology is physiological psychology, which focuses on the implications of physical bodily changes on mental processes. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder which is characterized by frequent seizures. Around 50 million people worldwide have epilepsy, according to the World Health Organization.[1]
Corpus Callosotomy is one of the many ways it can be cured. Sectioning, or separating, the corpus callosum (a nerve bridge that connects the two halves of the brain and integrates its functions) was first reported in the medical literature in 1940.[2]
Two Hemispheres
The brain’s two hemispheres, the left and the right, are joined by the commissural fibers that allow communication between them. Each side of the brain has different functions, and communication is necessary so that both of the hemispheres of the brain know what is going on in the other.
These fibers were cut in the epileptic people’s brains and as a result. There was no means of internal communication within the brain.
This meant that if one side of the brain were provided with new information, the information would only stay on that side, leaving the other side with no idea of what had happened. Thus, these patients seem to have two brains!
