A language is an effective tool used in everyday communication, where English has acquired the most prominent position as an official language in more than 60 sovereign nations. As an international language, it has also become a requisite component of the academic curriculum in several educational institutes. English in non-English speaking countries is gradually becoming a mandate, as educational institutions turn to English as a medium of instruction due to English as a Foreign Language’s (EFL) progressive introduction in the curriculum.
Vocabulary is the critical part of foreign language learning and is necessary to master the foreign language. However, multiple skills are involved in learning vocabulary thus making it a complicated process of acquisition, retention, and transfer. The teaching and learning process of vocabulary has always remained a challenge for teachers and students due to the fact that there has been very limited attention to vocabulary instruction in classrooms for ESL. The impact has emerged in the form of the need of emphasizing on the vocabulary development as part of language learning process. The native English speaker on average knows at least 5000 words in nursery class but the non-native person knows only a few words in English. The English language learners face the challenge of building a strong foundation so that it is possible to close the language gap. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate the significant influence of the Chunky method on EFL learners’ vocabulary retention. The Chunky method is a means to teach students about the connection between words to assist them in retaining vocabulary. This new paradigm can be a potential way for learning vocabulary and therefore, needs comprehensive investigation.
This paper presents chunking techniques for vocabulary retention. The richness of vocabulary repertoire in learning and using a new language is well understood. The more words EFL learners know, the more they are able to comprehend what is being heard and read and therefore, communicate in an effective manner. Teaching EFL students the art of mastering vocabulary retention to overcome English learning difficulties through chunking must be undertaken in every EFL programme.
Vocabulary learning has been of paramount importance for language learners. Language learners complain of the drudgery of learning vocabulary and forgetting the learned vocabulary items sometime after learning them. At the time of vocabulary use whether in speaking or writing, the learners need to access those learned items. Therefore, vocabulary retention is as important as learning it because learning vocabulary alone is not enough. Usually, the vocabulary items learned are to be retained for subsequent use, thus, vocabulary retention may be a source of problems for the majority of foreign language learners
The major constraint in teaching language is remembering the vocabulary for longer instances. As the learners have to comprehend multiple words and phrases during vocabulary acquisition, the recollection of words over time becomes difficult. Although most teaching methods are concerned with improving learning at the instructional phase, only a few emphasize retaining what has been learned.
