From the 1790s, the industrial revolution had taken its course in the United States (Nevins, 1994). From the early 19th Century, the United States went through an industrial revolution.

The work that many people did changed. They moved from the usual farms they worked on previously and from the small workshops into the much larger factories. People developed the habit of purchasing things in stores, rather than make them at home. The purchase of items also eliminated the usual trading of items with the neighbors. The use of machines was on the rise and the purchase of machine-made products was even more (Nevins, 1994).
