Intrinsic Motivation

The intrinsic motivation is characterized by involvement of participants in sports in search of enjoyment and gratification. The first type of motivation that is intrinsic motivation towards accomplishment indicates that a sport is played for the enhancement of personal skills. The second type which is intrinsic motivation towards learning indicates that an individual shows interest in a specific sport and plays it in order to gain more knowledge of that specific sport.

The third and the last motivation type that is motivation to experience stimulation indicate that a sport is being played with the interest of gaining stimulating experiences.

At last the opposite of intrinsic motivation is motivation. Motivation is characterized by absence of motivation within a person. It refers to the scenario of not having any kind of intentions of doing anything and it represents the frustration feelings in a person. An example of this type of motivation can be a person who used to actively participate in sports but now he finds no interest in continuing it.

Extrinsic motivation

The extrinsic motivation is characterized by the dedication towards an activity for the reason of achieving something rather than end in itself. The extrinsic motivation also has different types that depend upon the type of regulation that is from less to more self-determined.

The four different types of regulations are introjected regulation, identified regulation, external regulation, integrated regulation and identified regulation.

External regulation means not doing a certain activity to gain awards or avoid punishments; instead, it is done to gain external incentives. For example, a person plays sports only to get recognized among its society. .Introjected regulation is mainly characterized by performing any action for achieving self satisfaction and it is initiated because of any guilt or worry. For this reason it can be the sign of fact that something must or has to be done,. For example, a person plays sports to achieve self-satisfaction.

Identification

The identified regulation is characterized by the significance of an activity to improve personal health. The identified regulation is based on self-determination. For example an individual recognizes the fact that a specific physical can help him to improve his health and for this reason he prefers to go to sports centre on regular basis.

However, the reason for involvement in sports in this type of regulation is limited only to the improvement of a person’s health and is not concerned with personal satisfaction or enjoyment. The integration regulation is considered as the most self-determined form of extrinsic motivation.

This form of extrinsic motivation incorporates many factors and organizes them hierarchically. The factors are then assessed and brought into correspondence with other needs and values of an individual.

As a result there is synthesis and self-awareness. For example, an individual who is involved in sports realizes the fact that it is a significant part of a healthy and active lifestyle.
